Can You Freeze Cheesecake? (The Right Way)

Can You Freeze Cheesecake Cover

The first thought that comes to my mind when I think of my favorite dessert is cheesecake. I used to have cheesecakes almost every other day as a child.

Not going to lie, sliding a fork in the silky homemade cake makes all the time you spend making it worthy. Its rich, velvety texture and soft and creamy taste are worth dying for.

However, one thing I didn’t like about cheesecakes was that they could only be eaten fresh. When I grew up, I researched ways to freeze a cheesecake, so I could eat it whenever I wanted.

Guess what? I’ve been trying a hack to freeze cheesecakes for over three years now, and it has never disappointed me once.

Now, I can eat the store-bought cakes for almost one week and the homemade cakes for almost a month!

So, continue reading if you, too, love eating a velvety cheesecake for almost a week after buying it.

Can you freeze cheesecake?

Let’s face it, we all have heard that dairy and freezing do not usually go well together. When frozen dairy products defrost, they lose their smooth texture and take on a lumpy or gritty appearance, and sometimes even water.

This makes the sweetness of the cheesecakes fade, and the fruit chunks also start getting soggy.

However, cheesecakes are an exception. You can easily freeze a cheesecake as I do it. Don’t worry about your cheesecake losing its flavor or consistency or limiting the kind of toppings before you freeze it.

You can use anything from cream to fresh fruits, put your cheesecake in the freezer, and still get the best results.

Is it safe to freeze cheesecake?

You must be wondering if it’s safe to freeze a cheesecake? Let me tell you, freezing cheesecakes is absolutely safe.

Any type of cheesecake can be frozen, whole, or in individual pieces without changing the recipe. But if I freeze an entire cheesecake, I do so as soon as it has cooled and solidified.

There are some procedures for freezing cheesecake that will preserve its fresh flavor. The majority of cheesecake recipes taste even better the next day or after being frozen. Hence there is no need to be concerned about its quality or freshness.

If you’re making a cheesecake at home, try to follow a recipe that says it can be frozen for longer periods. Or if you’re buying it, ask the bakery how long you can preserve it in the fridge.

How to freeze cheesecake?

I myself follow these alternatives to freeze my cheesecake, and my cheesecake always comes out perfectly.

Firstly, ensure your cheesecake is totally cool or at room temperature. Sometimes, I keep the cheesecake in the fridge for 4-6 hours before freezing it.

Once you’re done, decide if you want to freeze it in slices or the whole cake because once it’s put in the freezer, there’s no way you cut the cake without allowing it to defrost.

As for myself, I freeze in slices because that way, it takes less time to defrost a slice whenever I want to eat it.

Then, carefully wrap the cheesecake in cling wrap to shield it from the freezer burn of my freezer and try not to press my plastic wrap down too firmly on the cake.

Once my cheesecake, whole or sliced, is fully wrapped in plastic wrap, I wrap it again with foil, and I set it on top of a sturdy base, like cardboard.

What is the best way to freeze cheesecake?

The best approach to freeze a cake, in my opinion, is to allow it to cool entirely at room temperature, fully set, and chill in the refrigerator overnight if it is baked; and chilled long enough to fully set if it is a no-bake cheesecake.

Once a cheesecake has chilled, wrap the entire cake, or slices in a foil before covering it with plastic wrap for an entire cheesecake and set it on a plate or cardboard circle before wrapping it in plastic.

Marking the aluminum foil with the date also helps to remember how long your cheesecake has been sitting in the freezer.

How to thaw frozen cheesecake?

When I’m ready to enjoy my cheesecake, I move it straight from the freezer to the refrigerator to defrost.

For the perfect consistency, I often let my cheesecake defrost overnight. That way, the amount of condensation reduces, and it doesn’t become overly soft.

Sometimes, I place the cheesecake on my kitchen counter for 30 minutes on room temperature after it has thawed.

It is because the cake can melt or lose its rich, dense quality if you use a microwave for defrosting. For best results, eat it within a day or two days after the cake is thawed.

How long does frozen cheesecake last?

Cheesecake can’t be frozen for extended periods, unlike other desserts like cookies, and brownies. If it’s a store-bought cheesecake, simply check the expiration date. I try not to buy cheesecakes from the store as I cannot freeze them for long periods.

Homemade cheesecakes can be frozen for a month, but after that, the flavor and texture will start to change. However, I believe that going over a month would be pushing your luck.

So, while I try not to take chances with my favorite desserts, you can surely give it a try.

Final verdict:

So, this was all you should know before freezing a cheesecake. I hope that these instructions would be helpful to you as well.
