Can You Freeze Chorizo?

You can freeze chorizo like you can freeze every other meat. You can freeze it as a whole or in slices; you can freeze it raw or cooked or freeze it with its skin intact or cut.

But, there are a few things you should take care of and consider before you decide to freeze your chorizo and give them a good freezer life (which we will discuss in this blog)

5 Tips for Freezing Chorizo

Now that you have some chorizo in your hands that you need to freeze, there are a few tips you should know about and follow if you want perfect results when you defrost your chorizo. So, let’s get started on those tips.

Buy proportioned chorizo.

Most supermarkets have multiple options when it comes to chorizo. For example, they offer diced chorizo, full ring, cured, uncured, sliced, etc.

In addition, you can buy portioned chorizo, which is perfect for one dish. This way, even if you buy a lot of portioned packs, you can easily toss them in the freezer without any preparations.

Cook it in a dish

Instead of freezing your chorizo as it is or directly from the supermarket, you should freeze the dish you cook with chorizo.

Cooking ensures that all the harmful bacteria die, and you can quickly freeze that dish. We know that making a dish sounds tedious, but it is better to cook your meat than freeze it.

Try not to freeze-cured chorizo.

Cured meat doesn’t have an excellent record of freezing well; its taste gets altered, and even the scent changes.

If you freeze cured chorizo, you will notice a significant difference in its texture, taste, and smell, so avoid freezing cured chorizo and try to freeze it cooked or raw.

Don’t skip the wrapping.

The biggest challenge while freezing chorizo is to stop it from drying out. So, if you want to keep it fresh and moist even after months in the freezer, don’t forget to wrap it when you put it in the freezer.

Wrap it in 2-3 layers of foil or cling film and finally in a freezer bag or airtight container to stop it from drying beyond use.

Always remove the castings.

Most of the time (90%), chorizos come in their castings, protecting them from foreign scents or getting spoilt. Even though these castings are edible, you should still squeeze out the chorizo from that casting or cut it for cooking purposes.
